Located on a prime corner in New York Midtown in the Ground and First Floor of the Crown Building, the Bulgari Boutique represented a landmark in the city. After the lighting project for the Condotti Boutique in Italy and the UK, it was New York’s turn to get illuminated and reveal the refreshed Peter Marino’s vision of the Maison.
The Condotti set the basics for the interior and lighting design main elements, but in New York Marino got his creativity exploded stressing the Renaissance vision at its best.
The finishings is extended in number and in vibrancy with a series of colourful marbles and stones from columns to the staircase covering and the favourite material of Marino, the bronze, the Ancient Roman material of choice which once again becomes full height screen, ornament, lighting fixture, inset and facade element.
The custom made suspension developed for the Condotti boutique is used also in New York as the main instrument for keeping the spotlight always on the jewelries, the main protagonist. The Pantheon pattern designed by Marino became a 2D motif in bronze where the light fitting is integrated and hanging over the table displays also as cluster or following the underlying counter’s shape.
A great work has been again dedicated on integrating minimal light fittings inside the various displays and millwork developing a number of bespoke lighting solutions.
In the different areas like the VIP lounge, architectural details were inserted for differentiating the atmosphere from the main salon with the two imposing big scale bronze chandeliers designed by the famous Italian postwar architect Giò Ponti.
The exuberant set is completed with another unique element of this boutique, the full height bronze grillwork facade where integrating the light had been another singular challenge.
The lighting project in such singular spaces is a demanding work on setting the visual focal points given also by the architect’s screenplay, while maintaining the highly demanding proper illumination of gems and jewels at their glory.
