THE SKY
TAIPEI
Light is an essential component of architecture, and The Sky Taipei embodies a typical trait of our approach: achieving the integration of light within architectural lines to create a reading of space that remains faithful to the original architectural intentions.
The design principles guiding the lighting vision were threefold: first, the seamless integration of fixtures into the architectural detail; second, repeatability and modularity maintained throughout the building’s entire 280-meter height; and third, the capability to control each individual light point independently.
The Sky Taipei presents as a building envelope of transparent greenish glass panels with slightly iridescent finish that transforms throughout the day in response to natural light and reflections. During evening hours though, the building undergoes a striking transformation while preserving its architectural identity: the light contribution enveloping it remains subtle, dynamic, and controllable point by point.
Light adds a layer of interpretation, creating a pattern and repetition that convey a rhythm extending all the way to the uppermost tower slot. Achieving this level of integration demands early dialogue with manufacturers, contractors, architects, and the client, a collaborative approach that transforms technical challenges into design opportunities where light and architecture speak as one.
